Guangzhou, in English and other European languages also known as Canton or Kwangchow, is a sub-provincial city and the capital of GuangdongProvince in the southern part of China.

Guangzhou is a port on the Pearl River, navigable to the South China Sea, and is located about 75 miles northwest of Hong Kong. It is the most populous city in the province and the third most populous metropolitan area in China. The provincial government's official estimate of the metropolitan area's population at the end of 2006 was 9,754,600. Guangzhou's urban land area is the third largest in China, behind only Beijing and Shanghai.

Guangzhou is the main manufacturing hub of the Pearl River Area, one of mainland China's leading commercial and manufacturing regions. In 2008, the GDP reached ¥821.58 billion (US $118 billion), per capita was ¥81,233 (US $11,696), ranking 6th among the other 659 Chinese cities.

The China Import and Export Fair, also called "Canton Fair", is held every year in April and October by Ministry of Trading. Inaugurated in the spring of 1957, the Fair is a major event for the city.

The public transportation of the city consists of a five lines metro system, a comprehensive bus system and a convenient taxi system. The location of the university is right in the center of the city which makes it easy to transport to anywhere.

As a historical city,
Guangzhou is famous for the numerous sites of interests. It includes Chan Clan Ancestral Hall which is also known as the Guangdong Museum of Folk Handcraft, the Shamian Island, the bund of Guangzhou,   Guangdong Provincial Museum and the Museum of the Tomb of the King of Southern Yue in Western Han Dynasty, Temple of the Six Banyan, one of the oldest Buddhism temple in China, Sacred Heart Cathedral   Chime-Long Paradise, etc.

Apart from the historical sites, the city is also famous for its night life. Long known as the first sleepless city on Mainland
, there are many bars and pubs around the town.
