About the GHMUA
With the increasingly conspicuous development trend of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, the concept and plan of Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and Great Bay District construction have been officially put on the agenda to train the country to cultivate innovative composite talents and output that meet the social development needs of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in the new era. The scientific and technological innovations that lead the technological revolution have become an important historical mission and a strategic vision of universal consensus in the universities of the three places. In 2015, Sun Yat-sen University took the initiative to jointly set up the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Universities Alliance (hereinafter referred to as the “Alliance”) with the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Macau, in order to bring together the high-quality teaching and research resources of the elite universities in the three places, deepen the educational exchanges and cooperation between the three universities and jointly create The “One-Hour Academic Circle of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao” has helped the construction of the “One Belt, One Road” between Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau.
On June 23, 2015, the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Ministry of Education officially approved the formation of the alliance; on November 15, 2016, under the support and guidance of the relevant government departments of the country and the three places, the alliance was formally established at Sun Yat-Sen University. The Alliance is a non-profit university cooperative organization voluntarily composed of universities in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. So far, there are 37 elite universities in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao (21 in Guangdong, 9 in Hong Kong, 7 in Macau), and the alliance is supported by Sun Yat-Sen University. The chairman of the board of directors, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Macau as the vice chairman unit, the alliance secretariat is standing at the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs Office of Sun Yat-Sen University.
Since its inception, the Alliance will promote the in-depth development and integration of exchanges and cooperation between universities in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao as a working purpose, and serve local and national development strategies as a historical mission. With the support of relevant government departments, through continuous innovation and experimentation, the Alliance has carried out a series of fruitful work in the fields of scientific research innovation, academic exchange, personnel training, and expansion cooperation in the past few years, and has been organized under the framework of the alliance. Established a number of professional alliances such as library, super-computing, space science and technology, marine technology and innovation, Chinese, Chinese medicine, public health, etc., effectively condensing the cooperation consensus of the three universities and colleges to learn from each other and create a common understanding. The establishment of a cooperative system with a hundred flowers and distinct characteristics has opened a new journey for the exchange and cooperation of higher education in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao in the new era and opened up a new situation.
On February 18, 2019, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council issued the Outline of the Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Dawan District (hereinafter referred to as the “Outline”), clearly stating that the Great Bay District should be built as an international science and technology innovation center and an international education demonstration zone. Introduce world-renowned universities and featured colleges to promote the construction of world-class universities and first-class disciplines; and give full play to the role of the Alliances, encourage universities in the three places to explore mutual recognition of specific course credits, implement more flexible exchange arrangements, and research Exchange and cooperation in the areas of results sharing and transformation. The future alliance will further develop the demand for the development of the Bay Area and the country, use the advantages of its own platform resources, conclude more exchanges and cooperation, export more high-level talents and core technological achievements, and effectively implement the national "one country, two systems" and continue to deepen reform. Open and actively participate in global exchanges and cooperation to contribute to the power.
